Materials cost per student - $15.
Math Support - Could you use some extra time or help understanding math? Do you want to raise your grade? Get support from a POCS math teacher, improve your math skills through games and technology and finish up your homework before the final bell rings!
Social Justice Enrichment - Our social justice enrichment will focus on examining social issues in a deep and meaningful way. Students will spend class time learning about an issue through literature, the media and movies. The class will involve researching the issues, watching movies about the issues and having Socratic Seminars and debates between students. We will also spend time in class giving students a chance to develop ideas on how we all can be agents of change to address social injustice in our community and the world. Topics will be decided on by the students at the beginning of the trimester. Some examples of possible issues to explore would be: LGBTQ rights, racism, economic inequality, climate change, immigration and gender inequality. This class will be taught by Mrs. Meyer and Ms. Brandenburg.
Strategic Gaming - This class will offer students the opportunity to cooperate with their friends and classmates playing multiple board and strategy games the old fashioned way (non-computerized). Through gaming, students will practice logical thinking, strategic planning, conflict resolution, and creativity. Students will play a variety of games as well as teach others how to play games. Students who repeat the class will also have the opportunity to design, test, and create their own game.
Culinary - Learn some cooking basics, including stove-top and baked goods recipes. The focus of the class is eating healthy and delicious meals and snacks. Materials cost per student - $15.
Drama - To Be or Not to Be...The fun thing about drama is that you learn and practice being all sorts of characters. This class will focus on developing basic dramatic skills through drama games, skits and possibly a talent show. Included in this class are singing (karaoke anyone?) and public speaking.
Gardening - Seeking innovative, hardworking, students to plan and organize a critter party at the garden resort that you design. Let’s talk about the birds and the butterflies. Invite some worms and bees, and let the party begin! Your guests will dine on some of the best organic delicacies in town as they lounge under the sun by your crystal clear waterfall. Break out your tools and get ready to build a four star insect hotel, bird penthouse or worm bungalow. Do something great for your community and earn service hours while you’re at it.
School Newspaper - The students in this enrichment class will work together to publish a monthly POCS online newspaper. Do you like interviewing students and teachers about important issues at our school? Would you like to be a published author? Consider joining this fun, interactive, creative class and help keep our community informed about the latest happenings.
